Hawkes Bay Forestry Group Scholarship

Hawkes Bay is growing 165,000 hectares of highly productive plantation forests of which 127,180 hectares are managed by members of the Hawkes Bay Forestry Group.

This renewable natural resource supports the largest processing plant in the Bay and a significant part of the business of the Port of Napier.

The Group recognises the need for effective communication to help understand the contribution forestry is making to our economic, social and environmental well-being and to encourage local people to become part of this exciting story.

Communication

To promote forestry’s contribution to social, economic and environmental health. We seek dialogue, understanding and collaboration with councils and communities.

Environment

To seek improvement in forestry’s environmental performance. We recognise shortcomings and bring knowledge, context and balance to policy change.

Employment

To encourage more people to want to work in forestry. We erase entrenched bias against forestry work and promote its ample and diverse opportunities.

Environmental Integrity

Woody Debris

Summarised learnings from Cyclone Gabrielle in Interpine Report. Ongoing assessment and practice review.

Woody Roads (Shred Roads)

Shred Road research being conducted under FGR ands Pan Pac trials. HB based Masters student conducting relevant research into the use of wood as a roading medium.

Cable assist and backline track, care and rehabilitation.

Reducing the environmental risk of this practise across the region by sharing information, tools and instructions. Project group formed to advance this. Field trip to exhibit.

Biomass Energy

HB Forestry Group Biomass energy subcommittee leading a strategic process with Whirika Consulting. Funded by EECA.

Resilient Infrastructure

Post Cyclone Gabrielle rebuilding road and infrastructure efforts led to a range of solutions now being shared. Project group formed to advance this. Field trip to exhibit.

Fish Passage

Education of field staff and field visits held to advance practices and improving fish passage where it will have most impact.

Spatial Intelligence

Collaborations between HBRC and company spatial specialists.

Myostis petiolata

Endangered ‘forget me not’ restoration project Matariki, Pan Pac Forest Products, Ngati Hineuru, Maungaharuru Tangitu Trust, DOC.

Kakabeak Restoration

Nationally critical species being restored in HB and East Coast. Partners are Pan Pac Environmental Trust, RedAxe Forestry Intelligence, Forest Lifeforce Restoration Trust, Matariki Forests, Biodiversity HB, DOC Community Fund, Ngati Pahauwera Development Trust, Plant HB Nursery.

Pakuratahi Land Use Study

Nationally significant project to compare sediment and water quality impacts across; forested, native forest and farmed subcatchments. Repeating this study for the second rotation harvest event starting in 2026. Partners are SCION, MPI, MfE, Pan Pac, HBFG, Maungaharuru Tangitu Trust.
